What are the applications of maximum power transfer theorem?

To understand the applications of maximum power transfer theorem, we must first understand what is maximum power transfer theorem in electrical circuits. To deliver max power from the electrical source (Voltage source or current source) to the load, the value of load must be equal to the thevenin resistance of the circuit.



If value of load resistance is higher or lower than the thevenin resistance of the circuit than the power delivered will be less than the maximum.

One more point to be noted here that maximum power is not 100% power delivered, it is only 50% when above said condition is met. For value of load resistances less than the thevenin resistance than the power delivered will be less than 50%.

Applications of maximum power transfer theorem:
  1. In designing audio systems the weak audio signals are delivered from the source to the speakers. To deliver the maximum output in the speakers, maximum power transfer theorem must be satisfied.
  2.  In radar designing the signals that come back and transmitted are very important in terms of power, therefore maximum power transfer theorem is applied to get the highest power at transmission and reception of signals.
  3. In electronics communication systems like your mobile phones, power is important. If power is not managed properly, it will drain your battery. Max power transfer is required to make efficient use of battery.
  4. Maximum power transfer theorem application is also required in robotics. The battery is required to derive the robot motors, if not properly managed the battery power of robot go down quickly.
  5. In your digital watches also maximum power transfer theorem is applied to prevent the cell discharging quickly.
From all the above practical applications of maximum power transfer theorem, one thing is clear that for battery operated devices the battery or cell energy must be used efficiently. If the cell or battery energy is not used efficiently, the cell or battery will discharge.

Hence we can say that wherever we want to save and use our electrical energy efficiently, in all those applications or implementations we need the application of maximum power transfer theorem.
